"My husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Although we had spoken with our doctor, we had many questions unanswered and wanted to prepare to see the specialist. Through our CARExpress program, we called the 24-Hour NurseLine and they were so helpful. The nurse was able to give us very detailed information about the disease and what to expect. She also provided us with additional reference sources that we could research on our own."

Individual Vision Insurance - Which Type Do You Need?

There are various ways that you can obtain individual vision insurance for yourself.

Direct Reimbursement Plan

Save Individual vision insurance or even a dental vision insurance plan may be part of the healthcare package offered by your company. The law holds companies at least partially responsible for maintaining the health and well-being of their companies.

In some cases, companies opt for a direct reimbursement plan rather than providing a fixed contribution to monthly premiums of insurance policies of their employees. In this sense, it is not an individual vision insurance plan per se, but at least you'll still be able to have majority - or even all - of your medical expenses covered.

This is the best type of all because you will have little to pay as most of the expenses will be shouldered by your company. Unfortunately, it's also because of its very setup that few companies are willing to offer this. And those that do offer it have exceptionally stringent procedures that you'd have to complete before you can receive imbursement.

For starters, your company could ask for a copy of your medical records as well as certification from your dental care provider that you are considered well and able to resume work. Definitely, original receipts of all expenses must be submitted to your payroll or human resource office.

Indemnity Plans

If your company doesn't offer a direct reimbursement plan then it probably has an indemnity plan designed to provide vision care for its employees. In this case, your employer could pay the minimum amount required for employer contribution or even more. Your contribution, on the other hand, would be automatically deducted from your monthly wages to ensure continuous protection.

How much the insurance company would pay once you've incurred expenses will depend on the type of service or treatment you've availed of. Most companies adhere to the UCR system for classifying reimbursement needs. UCR stands for "usual", "customary", and "reasonable".

Managed Care Plans

Another option to obtain vision insurance is by signing up for a managed care plan, which may or may not be provided by your company.

With managed care plans, you are only entitled to pay less when you avail of dental services from any of the listed vision care providers for the plan. If you choose any other vision care provider, you will have to pay the full retail price of the product or treatment.

There are two kinds of managed care plans for you to choose from. The PPO program, which stands for preferred provider organization, offer a specific network of vision care professionals or facilities to provide the treatments you may be in need of. With an HMO or health maintenance organization program, on the other hand, you'll have to pay for a fixed rate every month but receive treatment for free.

There is, however, a catch: there is a limit to the number of times you make use of your managed care plan.

Save More with a Preferred Medical Card

If none of these options appeal to you then you probably need a Preferred Medical Card. With a Preferred Medical Card, you enjoy greater discounts from a comprehensive array of products and treatments. Your monthly dues also provide you with a total healthcare package rather than just visual care alone.
